Giving Up or Transferring Your Mailing List:

If you no longer wish to administer your mailing list you can transfer the list to a new administrator or orphan the list.

Transferring the List to Another Administrator:

The recommended way to give up your list is to find a new administrator for it. You can do this by sending a message to the mailing list announcing your desire to step down as admin and request that anyone interested in taking over contact you off-list.

Once you have found a new admin, there are two ways to permanently transfer the list to them:

Via the List Administration Tools:

  1. Go to the list administration tools and click on the "General Options" link.
  2. Change the address in the "The list administrator email address" setting to the new admin's address.
  3. Click the "Submit Your Changes" button at the bottom of the page.
  4. Click on the "Passwords" link.
  5. Follow the instructions to change the list password to a temporary password that the new admin can use to access the admin tools.
  6. Send an email to the new admin letting them know you transferred the list and the temporary password you configured

Via the List Orphaning and Adoption Tools:

  1. Go to the List Orphaning page and follow the instructions provided to orphan the list.
  2. Once the list has been orphaned, let the new admin know so they can adopt the list by going to the list adoption form and entering the list name and other requested information.
  3. Once the new administrator's adoption request has been approved, they will receive an email with a new password link to the admin tools.

*Note that transferring the list in this manner will reset some list tool settings including the welcome message, footers and digest headers.

Orphaning Your List:

If you are unable to find a new admin for your list, you can "orphan" the list (i.e. put it up for adoption). Orphaned lists have no administrator and this can have consequences for the list. There are thousands of orphaned lists that are maintained by the ListMaster, and they obviously cannot receive the individual attention that a volunteer admin can offer.

To orphan your list, please go to the List Orphaning page and follow the instructions provided.
