Using the List Tools:
Taglines

Taglines are brief messages that appear at the end of each e-mail sent to a mailing list. The mailing list administrator can create taglines for his or her list by using the "Taglines" section of the List Tools. The taglines you create will only be seen by your list format (-L) subscribers, not those receiving digests.

Administrators can create up to ten rotating taglines. If one or more sections of the form are left blank, it will not result in blank or empty taglines on the list. Instead, each tagline will simply appear more frequently on the list.

Tag lines should not:

  • Exceed three lines of text, or 72 characters.
  • Be used for commercial or personal purposes.

If the tagline includes a link, some subscribers (including AOL subscribers) will not be able to click on it unless you have entered it as an anchor. Below is an example of how to format an anchor (link) to RootsWeb's home page; you would change the URL (address) in both places to direct people to another site. This example shows the coding on two lines due to width constraints; however, when you create it, it should be on one line, with no spaces between the two parts.

http://www.rootsweb.com/</a>

You may create, edit, or modify your taglines at any time. Clicking on the "Save taglines" button will add a new tagline to the tagline queue; clicking on "Reset" will remove any new taglines or edits that have not yet been saved.

RootsWeb adds commercial taglines to unsponsored lists, and these cannot be changed or removed. Sponsored lists (those created by someone who contributed financially to RootsWeb) have the option of turning off commercial taglines. If the existing list has commercial taglines, we cannot convert them to tagline free lists.
