MAY I USE CGI SCRIPTS IN MY USER ACCOUNTS?

No. RootsWeb does not allow cgi scripts in any user account, with the exception of scripts that have been created specifically for RootsWeb users. They can be found on the http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/index.html

Every webmaster at RootsWeb should review the Wizards site for hints, and helpful guides for managing accounts at RootsWeb.

MAY I PUT GEDCOMS ON MY WEBSITE?

No. You may want to consider uploading them instead to RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project, at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com. The WorldConnect software not only translates your GEDCOMs into Web pages, but also allows you privacy filtering and a variety of display options -- and it makes your GEDCOM easily searchable by millions of other genealogists.

WHY ISN'T MY PAGE LISTED ON THE "WEBSITES AT ROOTSWEB" INDEX?

The "Websites at RootsWeb" index at http://www.rootsweb.com/~websites/  is a voluntary listing of websites hosted by RootsWeb. Your URL (address) will not be added unless you, as webmaster, request it. You may request a listing by sending an email to websites@rootsweb.com

If your website is not housed at RootsWeb, it will not be listed on the index. You may however, add your URL to the RootsLink index at http://resources.rootsweb.com/~rootslink/addlink.html. All links on the RootsLink index must be genealogy-related.

I NEED HELP WITH MY WEB ACCOUNT.
(Uploading to RootsWeb, for example)

Your first step is to double-check yourself. Look at your confirmation message one more time. Are you uploading to the right directory (users.rootsweb.com or homepages.rootsweb.com for example)? Have you typed your account name in lower case letters (no capital letters)? If it's a new account, did you set your initial remote host directory to public_html? Did you FTP your html files in ASCII format? Did you FTP your graphics in binary format? Is your main page, or opening page, titled index.html (or index.htm)?

After double-checking the obvious, your next resource should be the Wizards page at http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/ as it contains the basic questions for RootsWeb webmasters.

At the time your account was set up, you were automatically subscribed to the rootsweb-help mailing list. This is an excellent place to post your atypical questions, as the subscribers to that mailing list have much more intimate knowledge of the various software and hardware combinations that you might be using.

If you still can't find an answer, you can always post your question or problem on the HelpDesk's message board (see link below).

I NEED TO CHANGE MY PASSWORD.
I FORGOT MY PASSWORD.

In most instances, you can retrieve your password through Password Central. If that fails, or you need to change your password for some reason, you should contact accounts@rootsweb.com The email needs to include your account name, your name, your e-mail address, and the reason why you need your password changed.

Please do not ask that your password be changed to something that is easy for you to remember. RootsWeb is one of the most secure systems on the Internet and this is due in part to using passwords that are "unbreakable." Passwords are auto-generated.

I NEED TO CHANGE PERMISSION ON A FILE.

Most files are preset to certain permissions when you upload them. Normally this is for "read only" by the world. However, in some cases you need to create files that are read and writeable to the world. Mail Merge requires that an output file be world read and writeable to work properly. To change permissions on the files within your user directory you need to have a good quality FTP client (software). You can find a list of good FTP clients by reading the webmasters FAQ at http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/webmasters.html

MAY I TELNET TO ROOTSWEB?

Telnet is not available at RootsWeb. Most user required commands can be issued through a good quality FTP client. You can find a list of good FTP clients by reading the webmasters FAQ at http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/webmasters.html
