Question:
I cannot access my RSL file; my password does not work.

Answer:
There are two common reasons this happens.

Check to see that you are using the correct nametag and password. The RSL and the Personalized Mailing Lists (PML) program do not share the same passwords, be sure you have the one for the RSL. If you are not sure, follow the links to search for your nametag, or request your password be emailed to you. You can do both from http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rsledit.cgi

Check your password for capitalization (or do a cut and paste). Passwords are case-sensitive and must be typed exactly as they appear in our file. The upper case/capital I (eye), has been especially problematic as it is next to impossible to distinguish from a lower case L or a number one.

Please try one more time, and if you are still having a problem, then contact the HelpDesk for assistance (see below). If you do not find your answer in the FAQs, then please follow the links to the HelpDesk Message Board.

Question:
I changed my address, who do I tell?

Answer:
If you are like most users, there will be many areas within RootsWeb that need to know about your address change. The HelpDesk FAQ on Address Changes reviews the various areas, and how to contact them. The URL is http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/addresses/

To change your address in the RSL, you will need to start with the RSL-edit form at http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rsledit.cgi for all the situations given below.

If your old address is still valid (you are still receiving mail there), you can go into the RSL-edit form and update your address now. Click on the link titled "update your existing submissions" - after accessing your file, make the change.

If your address has already changed, and you remember your password, you can go into the RSL-edit form and update your address now. Click on the link titled "update your existing submissions" - after accessing your file, make the change.

If your address has already changed, and you have forgotten your password, you may still update your file but it will be locked for a brief period of time. Why? Because we want to make sure that you, and only you, can update your address. During the locked period, we will send a confirmation to your old address - just to verify that no one is making an improper change to your file. Follow the link titled "I've tried to get my password via email but it doesn't ever come" to process the change.

Question:
How do I delete surnames from the RSL database?

Answer:
If you want to delete just a portion of your submissions, you can do that yourself by using the Submission & Edit Form at http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rsledit.cgi

Checking the small box at the beginning of a line ("Del" column) indicates you want that entry deleted.

If you want to close your entire account or file, please email rsl@rootsweb.com Please indicate if you would like your account inactivated or deleted entirely. Accounts can be inactivated for up to six months.

You should not request that your account be deleted, simply so you can start over with a "clean slate". Please write to us at rsl@rootsweb.com and explain the problem so we can help you.

Question:
I changed my name, now what?

Answer:
We realize that sometimes names change. You may change your name on the Submission & Edit Form, just as you would any other field. You will not be able to change your nametag, however.
