WHAT IS A SEARCH ENGINE? HOW DO I USE IT?RootsWeb maintains many search engines or search programs that allow users to look for information (surnames, queries) from a specific database. A search engine is basically a program used to query a database. It has a nice user-friendly query form that let's users type in certain search criteria (like your surname). When a user presses the "submit" button the search engine shows the results of the search.
The easiest way to understand how a search engine works is to try one! The RootsWeb search engines are at http://searches.rootsweb.com/ if you would like to try one now. Click on one of the links and follow the instructions. Make sure you type in your information exactly as the form states.
