Umlauted vowels and other symbols not in the twenty-six letter English alphabet can be used in the WorldConnect Project, RootsWeb Surname List (RSL), Surname Helper, and message boards.
Many researchers will not use character codes when doing surname searches. To make make sure your surnames are not overlooked, you may want to list your surnames with and without the character codes.
To create the characters shown below, hold down the "Alt" key while entering the numeric code shown to the right.
If this method doesn't work for you or seems too complicated, you can also insert special characters by going to the "Insert" menu in most Microsoft products and selecting "Symbol". A pop-up window will give you lots of options in the Latin-1 subset that you can insert, cut, and paste.
