Download
WorldConnect permits you to download portions of another researcher's family tree, if the submitter allows it. Downloading a file copies a portion of the family tree to your computer, so you can incorporate it into your personal files. As with any other source, be sure to verify the accuracy of the information.

Footer
If you are submitting a family tree, you have the option of adding a footer to your file. Many submitters use this area, which appears near the bottom of each page, for closing comments.

GEDCOM
GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunications. Within the WorldConnect Project, "GEDCOM" indicates an individual family tree or file. A more detailed explanation of what a GEDCOM is, and how it is used within the WorldConnect Project, is available here.

Upload
When you upload your family tree, you are transferring a copy of your file to the WorldConnect Project. It does not alter or remove the family tree on your computer.

column The user setup/edit form has multiple functions, which are activated by the submission buttons at the bottom of the page.

  • The Upload/Update Button is used to submit your family tree, to submit a revised copy of your family tree, or to revise the display options on the form. You do not need to delete an existing family tree prior to updating a revised copy. When you upload the revised file with the same user code, it will overwrite the existing one. You can change the display options at anytime, even if you are not uploading a revision to your family tree.

The length of time it takes to upload your family tree will vary, depending on the size of the file, the time of day (generally it will be faster during early morning or late evening), and the speed of your dial-up connection. If you can upload a .zip file, it will substantially reduce the time for uploading your file. You will receive a confirmation when the file has been completed.

The confirmation will recap what was uploaded, and provide a link to your family tree. The information in your file will not be in our search engine until the next update (within 24 hours), but you can view it online immediately to ensure the options are what you intended.

You will also see coding (see below) that can be used to create a link to your family tree from your homepage, or from other Web sites. The URL (address) for your family tree is between the quote marks. On some browsers the coding may wrap (appear on two lines), as it has here. If so, you will need to put the two segments back together.

    Example:
    <a href="http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/
    cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=usercode
    ">Title</a>

  • Remove Account results in your user code, your family tree, and everything pertaining to your account being removed from our server. It can take up to 24 hours before it is no longer on-line, as the database is only updated once a day.

  • Remove GEDCOM results in your family tree being removed, but your user code would still exist and you could upload another file using that code. It can take up to 24 hours before it is no longer on-line, as the database is only updated once a day.

  • Retrieve GEDCOM allows you to download your family tree as you submitted it, regardless of the display options you chose. The WorldConnect Project has two versions of your file: your original submission that only you can download, and the modified version seen by other researchers (which reflects the options you selected).

  • Reset allows you to clear the form and begin again.
