Terms and Definitions
The blue silhouette indicates that descendants of the marked
individual are included in the file.
Ahnentafel
Ahnentafel is a German word meaning "ancestor table."
WorldConnect's Ahnentafel report shows up to six generations of an
individual's ancestors.
Database (skip database)
"Databases" here are specific family-tree files. Submitters
choose a unique user code to identify each family tree submitted.
Descendancy (report)
The Descendancy option gives you an outline of the descendants of an
individual in the family tree. The maximum number of generations shown
on the report is determined by the person who submitted the family tree,
and by the number of generations appearing in the family tree, but will
not be more than ten.
Descendant
Your descendant is someone whose ancestry can be traced to you: your child,
grandchild, great-grandchild, etc.
Download
WorldConnect permits you to download portions of another researcher's
family tree, if the submitter allows it. Downloading a file copies a
portion of the family tree to your computer, so you can incorporate
it into your personal files. As with any other source, be sure to verify
the accuracy of the information.
GEDCOM
GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical
Data COMmunications.
Within the WorldConnect Project, "GEDCOM" indicates an individual family tree or file.

Pedigree
WorldConnect offers two formats for pedigrees. One format is a traditional
chart with branching lines, with a maximum of four generations. A compact
text-only format is also available, with a maximum of ten generations. The
number of generations shown on the report is determined in part by the
person who submitted the family tree, and by the number of generations
appearing in the family tree.
Register Report
The Register report shows up to six generations of an individual's descendants. This report is
in plain text format, making it ideal if you want to copy a portion of a family tree into an
e-mail message or use it in another context which requires plain text.
Surname and Given Name
"Surname" is another term for last name; "given
name" is a first or middle name.

An individual record displays all the information in a given family tree for one person.
Notes and sources will be shown, if available.

From the individual record you can:
- Follow links for parents, spouse, or children, to individual records
of each of these people. The blue silhouette indicates you will find descendants for that
person in the file.
- Request an assortment of reports or charts. Near the
bottom of the page (highlighted in blue for the example shown above) will be the report
options available for this person. There will be variance in which reports
are available, as it will depend on the information in the file. Click

- Download part of this family tree, beginning with the
individual shown. If the submitter has agreed to share their file, you will find
a "Download GEDCOM" link near the bottom of the page (highlighted in
purple for the example shown above). Most genealogy programs allow you to import
family trees that are in GEDCOM format. Click here
to learn more about downloading a file.
- Attach or view a Post-em Note. Add your comments or
corrections pertaining to the individual shown; view notes added by others.
You will see a link near the bottom of the individual record (highlighted in
green for the example shown above) to add a Post-em Note. To learn more about

If a Post-em Note has been added to the file, you will see a "View Post-em"
link in the same area towards the bottom of the page, plus a graphic near the top of
the page (shown above). To learn more about viewing Post-em Notes, click

- Follow the link to the submitter's homepage, if applicable. You will find the link
at the bottom of the page. In the example shown above, highlighted in yellow, you can see
a link to the "winch homepage".
