WorldConnect permits you to download portions of another researcher's family tree, if the submitter allows it. Downloading a file copies a portion of the family tree to your computer, so you can incorporate it into your personal files. As with any other source, be sure to verify the accuracy of the information.

Surname and Given Name
"Surname" is another term for last name; "given name" is a first or middle name.

column Every family tree in the WorldConnect Project shows who submitted the file. You will find this information near the top of the page in your browser, along with the number of records in the file and information on when the file was updated.

If you have downloaded a portion of a file, you may find the submitter has chosen to add a note to the pages with additional information.

When to contact the submitter

  • If you want to share additional information, inform them that you added a Post-em Note to their file, or tell them about other helpful resources.

  • If you have questions about the source of their information, or are trying to work out a discrepancy between your file and theirs.

  • If you would like to see the entire file at once. The WorldConnect Project will not allow you to download the entire family tree; only the submitter can do that. However, some submitters will share their file(s) with you, if you write and ask. They may feel more comfortable doing that one-on-one, knowing who they have shared their information with.

  • If the submitter chose to override our default settings and show living relatives in their family tree, and you want to write and request that your name not be shown.

Can't reach the submitter?

Please allow for some lag in responses. They may be on vacation, ill, or away from their keyboard for some other reason for an extended period of time. RootsWeb cannot control whether or not the submitter chooses to respond to you in a timely manner, or at all.

RootsWeb does not maintain an index of alternate addresses. For hints what to do if you can't reach the submitter, please read the FAQ on "resolving bad addresses".

When to contact RootsWeb

There are very few instances when you will need to contact RootsWeb, as the file (family tree) belongs to the person who submitted it. RootsWeb will not censor research compiled from public domain information. Public domain information includes basic facts such as names, dates, and places.

If the submitter is shown as deceased, and your name appears in their file against your wishes, contact our HelpDesk ONLY if there is not a contact address shown on the family tree. Please include your name as it appears in the file, and the URL (address) where your name appears. They will forward your message to the family (or personal representative), if an address is available. Our staff will let you know if your message was forwarded, or if not, what your options are.
