Terms and Definitions
Ancestor
Your ancestor is someone from whom you descended: a parent, grandparent,
great-grandparent, etc.
Database (skip database)
"Databases" here are specific family-tree files. Submitters
choose a unique user code to identify each family tree submitted.
Descendant
Your descendant is someone whose ancestry can be traced to you: your child,
grandchild, great-grandchild, etc.
Download
WorldConnect permits you to download portions of another researcher's
family tree, if the submitter allows it. Downloading a file copies a
portion of the family tree to your computer, so you can incorporate
it into your personal files. As with any other source, be sure to verify
the accuracy of the information.
GEDCOM
GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical
Data COMmunications.
Within the WorldConnect Project, "GEDCOM" indicates an individual family tree or file.

Surname and Given Name
"Surname" is another term for last name; "given
name" is a first or middle name.

The WorldConnect Project allows you to create an assortment of reports and charts:
ahnentafel, descendancy, index, pedigree, and register formats.
When you are viewing a database (family tree), you will find these options listed near the
bottom of the page. The options may vary for each person in the family tree. Not
every option will be available for each person, as it will depend on what
information is available. For instance, a descendancy report cannot be generated for a
person who has no descendants.
Hints on using or sharing these reports
- Use the copy/paste function of your browser to share all, or a portion, of these reports
with others via E-mail or postal mail.
- If you have Internet access while traveling, these reports can be a convenient resource.
No more lugging around heavy volumes of paper or large genealogy files.

The examples for these reports and charts use the same person as the starting point, to
assist you in comparing the formats.
Ahnentafel report [Example]
Ahnentafel is a German word meaning "ancestor table." WorldConnect's Ahnentafel
report shows up to six generations of an individual's ancestors. The maximum number of
generations shown on the report is determined by the person who submitted the family tree,
and by the number of generations appearing in the family tree.
Descendancy report [Example]
The Descendancy report gives you an outline of an individual's descendants, with a maximum of
ten (10) generations. The maximum number of generations shown on the report is determined by
the person who submitted the family tree, and by the number of generations appearing in the
family tree.
Index [Example]
The Index reports generated from an individual show all the names in that family tree,
beginning with that individual and continuing through the end of that letter of the alphabet.
(In the example you will see that it begins with Charles Ira Winch, and continues through the
entry for Jonathan Wood.) You can see the entire index of that family tree, by using the
"previous page" and "next page" options at the bottom of the page.

Pedigree charts [Example 1] [Example 2]
WorldConnect offers two formats for pedigrees, or charts of ancestors. One
format is a traditional chart with branching lines, with a maximum of four generations. A
compact text-only format is also available, with a maximum of ten generations. The number
of generations shown on the report is determined in part by the person who submitted the
family tree, and by the number of generations appearing in the family tree.
Register report [Example]
The Register report shows up to six generations of an
individual's descendants. The maximum number of generations shown on
the report is determined by the person who submitted the family tree,
and by the number of generations appearing in the family tree.
