ABOUT YOUR FAMILY TREE
(Includes linking to your family tree)
Terms and Definitions
URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. In layman's terms, it is an address for a document or resource on the Internet. The address of your family tree will include your user code(s).
The person submitting a family tree chooses a unique user code to identify each family tree submitted. The user code appears in WorldConnect's search results, and becomes part of the URL (address) of the family tree.

You will want to tell others where to find your family tree and encourage them to help expand your file. If you have a home page, you will want a link to your family tree.
- Telling others where to find your file
- Linking to your file
- Linking to your file with graphics
- Adding a search engine to your home page
There are two versions of your address. You were given the long version when you finished uploading your family tree, but the short version may be easier to remember and use when giving out the URL (address) for your file. Substitute the xxxx with your user code. Forgot your user code? Go to Password Central. Following is a sample of both a long and short address:
Long version:The short version includes a tilde (~) before the user code. The tilde key is generally located in the upper left-hand corner of a keyboard, next to the exclamation point.
Most e-mail programs give you the option of using a signature file. A signature file is a standard closing that your mail program automatically adds to the bottom of outgoing e-mail messages. If you use a signature file, be sure to include the address for your family tree in it.
If you have a home page, you will undoubtedly want to add a link of some kind to your family tree. You can add either a regular link, a graphic, or a search engine function.
The coding shown below will give you a standard text link to your family tree. Substitute your user code for the xxxx; replace Title with the title of your family tree or the description you would like to have shown for the link.
If you prefer a graphic link, there is an assortment of graphics for you to choose from. The instructions will include linking to the WorldConnect Project or to your specific family tree.
Your home page and your family tree can interface with each other. For example, your home page may include photographs or stories about an individual in your family tree. You can create a link from the photograph or story to your family tree or to a specific person in your family tree. You will want to add links from your family tree to your home page, too. Do that by using the advanced setup/edit form.
Another option is to add a search box specifically for your family tree, like the one shown below (this is a sample; it does not work). This will allow visitors to begin searching your family tree from your home page. Click here for instructions on adding a search box to your page.
